I think that Lehman tried to make it seem more logical. In the process, he threw out the theme of the serendipitious nature of life, where coincidences just happen.

I have problems with the stage version of Hello, Dolly! because some things don't make emotional sense to me. But for me it was a mistake to make the movie more literal in some of these plot points, with Dolly plotting it all out (particularly in terms of telling Cornelius and Barnaby about Irene and Minnie).
