Streisand's casting as Dolly was announced in May 1967. The film version of Sweet Charity did not open till almost two years later.
Despite the box-office success of The Singing Nun in 1966 (at least I think it was a box-office success, although criticallly lambasted), I think that the days of Reynolds being considered the kind of draw you'd call on to star in a big-budget musical were over. Remember they didn't even want her for Molly Brown. They wanted Shirley MacLaine. And she'd had some big box-office bombs in the few years before the Hello, Dolly! was being cast.
She also would have been a bit young for Dolly in 1967-68, although older than Streisand (and probably perceived as older than she was because she'd been around so long). |
