"Dark is the night and wild is the weather
Woman and man grow closer together
Cynics can laugh but whatever they say
Love is the start and the heart
And the hope of the day!"
and the ending:
"...cynics can laugh and say love is a lie
But for Woman and man
Love is surely forever and aye!"
The "and aye' is old-world for "forever and ever amen."
The brilliance of this song is its fury - she's singing about love but she is responding to her father who immediately before has sung "What the World Calls Love":
"Love's a game for fools to trust
Love is just another name for lust....etc"
"No!" she screams, "Your ideas of love - like your ideas of right and justice and duty - are wrong - all wrong!!" And then launches into "Woman and Man".
It's one of many thrilling breakthroughs that happen throughout a gorgeous script, which also includes montages, dramatic contrasts of setting and, in the finale, a train trip to Italy, including a final surprize - the train pulling in towards the audience ( beloved "On the Twentieth Century" eat your heart out!)
What a show. Just needs the production. And Audra. |
