| I'd be surprised if she got it. I think she's a totally terrific performer, but she could not do eight performances a week as Amalia in She Loves Me for a relatively short run. Eliza is a notorious voice killer. Amalia is no walk in the park, but despite the fact that Amalia's highest note is higher than anything Eliza has to sing, Amalia seems an easier sing overall. She isn't shrieking and torturing her vowels in her dialogue (and torturing her vowels in her singing as well). And even if she had an alternate as Eliza (which may well happen no matter whom they cast), I fear that Benanti would be out of her acheduled performances more often than they'd like. Talented as she is, she seems a bit fragile for the demands of this role, which is among the most vocally demanding and dangerous in the rep. |
