| If an American actress learns Cockney well-that is convincingly- then, switches that Cockney up to received pronunciation- bbc accent-(And lyric Soprano) ,the gear switching will lose some believability, especially since news interviews of the kind I'm a sucker for will show transformation clips etc. Two other e.g.s. In early 60's I watched an American actress Julie Harris on Hallmark Hall of Fame as Victoria Regina- had no idea who she was, ; Later,I watched the Emmys where she picked up an award and she followed that with Pygmalion(with James Donald) and I couldn't 'buy' her Cockney or upper Class Eliza.I Knew Too Much(for age 11) .Then , and this is perhaps an e.g of how first impressions stick with me. I saw an action-adventure film,THOR, with a fine English Actor, Chris Hemsworth who had a deep resonant speaking voice, etc. Then I saw a down-under tv interview with same actor; It turns out(as the Free World already knew), Mr Hemswoth is Australian, with a 'lighter' speaking voice. Now. when I see Mr H in other films, It takes a minute for my ears to adjust- it seems( to me) that he's "doing" an Australian accent- Sometimes, for me- it's better if I hit a film or play 'cold'; That make for more surprises, fun etc. Hope that makes some sense.....But then, yesterday I watched "Ricki and the Flash", with real life mama/.daughter Meryl Streep and Mamie Gummer- In about a minute and a half , I suspended' disbelief and only saw the charcters. Go Figure(sorry for the length)And I just realized we were talking 'bout race, A black Eliza Asian would be fine with me, it would just work better if 'we started' with a genuine Anglo Eliza.(I know, I'm so demanding) | |
