| Thank you, Delvino--I couldn't agree more. I found the writing to be the play's largest deficit, and I was shocked when it won the Pulitzer. The writing feels like someone doggedly trying to write an issues play, stuffing it full to bursting with every topical angle she can find. And frankly, so much of it feels phony, like it was written by someone who never met a working-class person. I generally think Nottage is a smart and lyrical writer, but I found none of those qualities in Sweat. Dominique Morisseau's Skeleton Crew--which was another favorite of the Pulitzer committee, but didn't make it to the shortlist (I was told by a friend who was on the committee)--handles many of the same issues with a lot more insightfulness. |
