| Good crowd last night at Santa Monica's Aero Theater for screening of 1776 and talkback with director Peter Hunt with LA Times critic Susan King. I haven't seen it on the big screen in decades and daughter Rebecca (who naturally grew up on annual home screenings) never had. Glorious to hear details in the orchestrations inaudible on my dinky TV sound system and to get good looks at the congressmen who never get lines (the fops with Rutledge in SC, the NY guy who isn't Morris or Livingstone), to notice the actors were all signing the document exactly where their characters did, and all the stuff in the street scenes, too. (The vein that pops in William Daniels' forehead while singing "Is Anybody There?" was a bit much, though.) And it was tremendous fun seeing it with people and laughing with them at the jokes, even though we all knew them by heart. Most numbers got applause (I confess to joining in, but it's still weird in a movie), the most for "But, Mr. Adams." Huge laugh when some guy went "Woohoo!!!" at Wilson's "My vote is yea." Hunt was delightful, with tales of the struggles in New Haven, the request from the White House to cut "Cool, Cool Considerate Men" and "Momma, Look Sharp" before the performance there, the loss and recovery of the footage for "CCM" that Jack Warner said he shredded at Nixon's request, working with Warner (Hunt had never directed a film and said he learned how to use the camera while doing the screen tests--but Warner laughed and said Welles and Mike Nichols did too), the great work done by Sony in the restoration, and many tales of Howard da Silva's bad behavior. I was happy when the lady behind me was chosen for the last question and she said, "This woman (pointing to me) has had her hand up since the start of the questions." So, thanks, kind lady! And after, I had Hunt sign my hardback copy of the libretto. Such a fangirl!! :) Laura |
