You're absolutely right about all of the above.

This is Bette Midler's show--and it's one of the great personal triumphs in musical theatre history.

It makes no sense to solicit reviews for Donna Murphy when they'd be completely foolish to muddy the waters by advertising or socializing them. If people say that Murphy is better (which happened when Raquel Welch went into Woman of the Year for Bacall), it would have a demoralizing effect on Midler. Scott Rudin doesn't want to be on the other end of the phone calls that WOTY's producers received from Bacall. The smartest thing he can do is to leave the door open for Midler to extend or return at some point.
