Lansbury addressed the issue in an interview on TCM. Em in The Harvey Girls is essentially a madam and Lansbury was a pure soprano in '46. MGM felt that women in that profession were definitely not sopranos. She did her own singing in The Picture of Dorian Gray in '45 and in her other musical roles (as far as I know).
Rosalind Russell recorded all her songs in Gypsy, but most of them were not used. Audrey Hepburn recorded some songs for My Fair Lady, but only her lead-ins to a few numbers were actually used in the film. I'm pretty sure that Hepburn was lied to because she stated in an interview before My Fair Lady opened that a good portion of her vocals would be heard in the film. I'm not sure exactly what Russell was told about her vocals in Gypsy. |
