I'm surprised that you didn't know about Juanita Hall. Rodgers apparently felt that Hall's voice had deteriorated in the years since she created the role. He also liked Muriel Smith's singing a lot. Smith had played Bloody Mary and Lady Thiang in London (she also played Lady Thiang at City Center), as well having been the original Carmen Jones. She also sang in opera houses, including the role of Carmen.

Anyway, Rodgers liked legit singing. (I don't much like the term legit singing, but it's commonly used.) Not that he didn't also write for belters sometimes, but he really liked legit singing. The funny thing is that Smith did not always sing "Bali Ha'i" in the somewhat operatic style she employed for the film. It is said that Hall was very unhappy about the choice to have Smith's voice used in the film. Who can blame her? But she wasn't so unhappy that she turned down the role of Madame Liang in Flower Drum Song (and her singing voice was used in the film version of that).
