Yes, thank you, I had forgotten that she hadn't actually made the phone call (haven't read the play in a few years).
If I recall the rest of that final scene correctly, the conversation is explicitly about the question raised in your second sentence: does his leaving imply that he was actually guilty? She thought so at the time, but now she isn't so sure. I believe she and Sister James exchange a few lines as Sister Aloysius tries to understand if she made the right choice.
But her doubts could easily extend to the other issues you raise... as well as whether she did the right thing in the first place, by lying to him about the phone call. She achieved her goal of getting rid of Father Flynn, but she has also taken a step away from God and might not be able to find her way back. |
