| Marcus Lovett is a Broadway actor whose credits included ''Les Miserables,'' ''Aspects of Love'' and ''The Phantom of the Opera'' (in the title role). But he made the front page of the N.Y. Times in 1994 when he took over the role of Billy Bigelow in Lincoln Center's ''Carousel'' with only 48 hours' preparation. (Lovett had never played the role.) ... Michael Hayden had been waylaid by a vocal-cord injury, and his understudy, Duane Boutte, had a bronchial infection, so neither could go on. That forced Lincoln Center to cancel 4 performances until Lovett stepped in. Anyway, Lovett did a cabaret act the other night at 54 Below. And Maryann Lopinto (mlop) took some lovely photos (link below). Though the pictures aren't captioned, they include Lovett and his singer-friend, Stacy Sullivan, as well as his wife, Christine, and their kids, Vance, Dylan and Cathryn. I was happy to hear Lovett's name again. I caught his act (and his beautiful voice) at Eighty Eight's back in the mid-'90s. Just out of curiosity, I looked up his name at IBDB.com, and was surprised to find out that Lovett hasn't been on Broadway since ''Carousel'' in 1994. (He did do a week of ''King David'' concerts in 1997.) However, according to his website, he played the Phantom in the West End in 2012, making him ''other than Michael Crawford, the only person to play the Phantom in New York and London.'' Did anyone remember seeing Lovett in ''Carousel'' back then ... or anything more recently? |
