I've seen the play on stage three times: first, in previews at MTC with original cast, next in a large touring production with Cherry Jones, finally in a very small local theater (who did a surprisingly wonderful job!).
It wasn't until that last, small production that I decided what that last line meant. When Sister Aloysius says "I have such doubts," I think she means not that she has doubts about Father Flynn's guilt (I think she has certainty about that!), I think her doubts are about how she handled the situation. She's feeling guilt that she should have done something more to keep Father Flynn from getting away with his crime, and moving to another parish where she is sure he will continue his predation. |
