First: there is an (oft-enough) quoted statement by the spiritually-minded sort, "the opposite of faith is not doubt, it's certainty" (could you please remember that when you cast all people of faith, and good will, as rectitude ridden and self-righteous)

Shanley calls his play "a parable"
and it's unfortunate that it appeared just as the phenomena of clergy abuse was accelerating.
With this controversy-immediacy, Doubt landed as a piece particular to child molestation in the Church, which hampered its more pertinent applications to human behavior, institutional power, and the inherent AMBIGUITY of people of limited capacity responding to life as it unfolds against expectations and preferences(and MUCH MORE...).

My feeling (one of my feelings) is that the priest did something 'dubious, not necessarily child abuse,
but some thing, because of naivete, idealism, all sorts of amorphous impulses which did not convey as intended. Perhaps it was a good action misread in the perceiving. There's a case to be made that he is a Christ figure (a bit of a reach, but still there for substantiation), impugned because of his progressive orientation, jealousy from women in subordination, the eternal process of reducing complex-nonconforming people to if-then modes of reacting. The priest does not seem like someone who would dot every i, and care about backing everything up with proper documentation, as the nun most likely would.

that's my reading, but the beauty, elegance, and breadth in the play lie in presenting these issues for all who see and read it, it is not a 'did-he-bump the altar-boy?' It is not necessarily about the perils of belonging to the Catholic Church, but uses the church as way to confront universal themes. to make it into a 'did he do it' diminishes Doubt to an equation when it is better served by metaphysics.
