| Eloquently put. To be fair, though, Shanley wrote the play in response to the historical child molestation that was finally coming to light and being discussed in public. To try and divorce the play from that catalyst is not unlike what another poster did in trying to divorce "Fun Home" from being the story of a lesbian and her gay dad. Yes, the specific starting point leads to a much larger scope - that is the mark of a good drama - but that doesn't mean the specific is unimportant or should be discarded because it gets in the way of the larger scope. |
