At 80 minutes (which is nearly a full-length), I would say the play isn't short so much as underbaked and empty. I left deeply unfulfilled by the play, not because it felt too brief (quite the opposite), but because Koogler provides rudimentary outlines for characters who are more schematic than dimensional, and who get locked into a pattern of repeating the same few (often illogical) mistakes over and over. For me, Aukin's direction, which favors distance and empty space, doesn't help a play which is already so blank, but then I don't think any production would have won me over.

This is one of those plays where the audience was quite split - many were laughing and seemed engaged, but many were also visibly bored and even asleep (since the audience is the backdrop, you can easily gauge their reaction). I wasn't surprised that Brantley flipped for it - he loves empty plays that let him feel smart by filling in the blanks - but shocked that Time Out loved it so much.

The actors all do a great job making some sense of it, and I guess that's enough for many people. But I wish Koogler would push himself to go deeper into his characters and find something real, rather than rudimentary.
