| Rodgers and Hammerstein were very involved in the film version of Oklahoma! They were much less involved with the film versions of their later shows. (Obviously, Hammerstein was not involved at all with the film versions of Flower Drum Song and The Sound of Music.) I suspect that no one realized that Hall's voice had deteriorated a bit in the years between the Broadway opening and filming. They realized it only when it came time for her to record the songs. The show opened in 1949. The movie opened in early 1958. Hall returned to the role in the Broadway production in June 1952 and stayed till May 1953, but even that was some time before they would have started filming. Also, Smith was rather beautiful and only in her mid-30s at the time they would have started making the film. She was in her late 20s when she first played the role. Much easier to give her the kind of look they wanted for the role onstage than it would have been in a movie. Hall was probably also the better actress. |
