| That fans expect this closeness and pictures? Where autographs have a certain distance, selfies are rather intimate in my mind. A friend waited for bette and she came out with gloves on and waved but didnt touch anyone or stop for pics or autographs and said thanks for coming heading to the car. My friend was thrilled, but others were disappointed. | |

| Selfies are part of the problem for a slightly different reason. They take a lot longer for the actor than signing. The youngsters don't want signatures; they want selfies. So the stage door thing takes a lot longer for actors nowadays than before. Plus, there are a LOT more people at the stage door than before social media. The stage door at Dear Evan Hansen reminds me of the stage door at Hamilton. Both have a young, fanatic audience who can't afford the crazy current ticket prices, so there are HUNDREDS of people at the stage door after each performance, many, maybe most, of whom have never seen the show. If Ben Platt were to send out pre-signed Playbills, he'd have to pre-sign 200 - 300 for every performance. I enjoy going to the stage door and talking to the actors, but I don't blame Platt (or anyone) for not wanting to deal with it. |

| I imagine there have always been some rude people at the stage door, but I'm afraid the culture of social media (ironically at the center of ''Dear Evan Hansen'') has only multiplied their numbers, especially among an Internet-savvy, younger generation. Whether through Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc., I fear too many of them feel a (false) familiarity with their favorite performers. For some, it's not enough to see the show; they want face time with the objects of their obsession, or better yet, a selfie to post on their Twitter, to validate their experience and brag to their friends. I'm guessing Diana McLaughlin is ticked off that she spent big bucks to take her daughters to ''Dear Evan Hansen,'' and because her daughters are probably upset at not seeing Platt at the stage door. Maybe they identify so much with Evan Hansen, and/or have giant crushes on Platt. Who knows? Add greedy autograph sellers to the stage-door mix, and you've got a mob that threatens to get overzealous and scary. |

| It goes to show: if they think so little of him as his efforts as a performer, why do they want a picture with him? And why would he want to be in a picture with them? | |

| I'm assuming they thought less of Platt after he skipped the stage door. I imagine it really soured their opinions of him. On the other hand, McLaughlin holds Josh Groban, Brandon Urie and Platt's own co-stars in high regard, since they DID stage-door. |

| Totally. I wouldn't be surprised if the reason this mother is so angry is because of pressure from the daughters, who would have total Facebook dominance if they had a photo with Ben Platt. They would rule the school. And meanwhile, Ben Platt is doing the work of an athlete, and he's going to need time and space to come down from the show (or perhaps stay in it), otherwise he will suffer physical damage, the same as any other athlete. The mother also said that being an actor isn't as hard as other jobs, but that's almost certainly because she has no idea how much work is actually involved in pulling off that performance 8 times a week for a year. Most people never go far enough in performance to get to the part where it actually becomes hard work; and yet they seem to imagine that it stays just as fun and effortless for professionals as it did for them when they were school kids. This would be like me thinking that a professional athlete puts in as much work to their sport as I did to high school P.E. soccer, where I was always a fullback so I didn't have to run as far. I understand the mistake that she's making, even as I'm baffled that someone could feel so entitled to another human being's free labor, but then she is a Trump voter. (Of course, they say the exact same thing about us.) |

| I was hoping to get Mr Creel(Go Blue -_U of MIch) to sign my playbill, but Just as he exited, there was a tropical downpour; A bit later, someone from the theatre said everyone had left.A young lady look confused, so I told her "they're done signing programs".The young lady said 'Bette doesn't have to sign my program, but she could at least pose for a picture with me",Perhaps they could change the name to selfishies-- no that's too strict, but you know what I mean | |
