| To be clearer, Ken Darby's comments are not included in the album's liner notes, but I believe I read them on YouTube, where one can watch Juanita's performance from the film with her own vocals from the OBCR dubbed over Muriel's. Either there or in The South Pacific coffee table book which is available at the Drama Book Store. The album versions of the two songs were definitely not recorded for the film or for any stage production. The orchestrations, particularly for Bali Hai, make that plain. The arrangement of Happy Talk could have been, actually, but the sound quality is much better than that of the '49 cast recording so I assume it was recorded at least a few years later. She probably never did get to record tracks for the film, but I wondered if she didn't do these two recordings to prove that she was still perfectly capable of singing Bloody Mary's two songs. (Ken Darby's comments were indeed on YouTube, and I attached the link for you) |
