Dolly, despite many weakness in the writing I think, is a great musical when all is said and done. Mame is not a great musical, it's a great character with a mediocre and dated musical around it. I don't think audiences are likely to go crazy for a Mame revival no matter who is in it.
I'll eat my hat if it's revived to great success... but I say this having re-listened to the OBCR unprompted just yesterday... for "Broadway treasures" it is definitely one of the more mediocre ones (despite a couple of good songs and a couple of fun songs). |
