I believe that the commercial producers were unable to raise the money necessary for a regular Broadway production. Adding their enhancement to what MTC would normally budget for a production at the Friedman allows the show to get on its feet and get reviewed. If it's a big success, the commercial producers should have no problem raising the money to move it. If it's a flop they will have saved a bundle. If it's a middling success, they won't be able to raise the money and everyone will say what a shame this show can't have a longer life.

This is basically the route that AMERICAN PSYCHO should have taken -- and was originally going to take, until unwiser heads prevailed :-(
