I don't have any specific knowledge, but I can tell you this: by the time that MTC is in the position to produce this show, all of the commercial producers have passed (and I would wager that the Roundabout and Lincoln Center have as well).

As for August, that's not the worst timing. It gets them the end of the summer crowd, and it also gets all of the back to school kids. I could see myself telling my newly arrived freshman in my theater course that they should go see this in order to get a sense of the history of the American musical and in particular Prince's legacy. Of course, I'd also tell them that Prince's genius was in his creation of entire shows, rather than stand-alone numbers... and that they could just go see Phantom if they wanted to get a glimpse of Prince at the top of his game.

Can't see the summer (i.e. tourist) crowd showing an interest in this. After all, there's NO BETTE MIDLER! 😭😭😭MTC has their subscription base, so I don't think it matters to them when the show starts.
