| You have nothing to worry about. As long as your apartment is still your primary apartment while you're away, which it will be, and you don't earn anything on it while you're away, you are covered under Rent Stabalization guidelines. I was away at grad school for eight years, and had friends stay at my rent stabalized apartment while I was away with no problem. A few things to consider: some landlords are different than others, and some will use your absence as an excuse to make problems for you if they want to. This did not happen to me, but I've heard of it. It's illegal, but they may try. Be sure to pay the rent yourself while you're away, and on-time. Also, it's better if you have friends stay there, or friends of friends, rather than an official sublet, which is what I think you're suggesting. If it's someone you know, it's easier. Check the Rent Stabalization guidelines online and you'll see that what you're doing falls within accepted parameters. Also, contact the Tenants Association, and tell them your situation.
