| I weighed in on what a fan I became after two hearings. Now, a couple of weeks later, I know the score more intimately, and I'm deeply moved by the story it tells, and how its open-hearted take on postwar psychological trauma creates a genuinely stirring collection of songs. A sliver of history dramatizing (whatever the flaws in the show) American sacrifice and consequences, a subject not often on my mind since 11/9/16, for, uh, other reasons. I always start my 4th with the gorgeous overture to "Rags," the Strouse score a celebration of Ellis Island's legacy that wrings tears. No exception today. "Rags" and "Bandstand" -- zero in common theatrically or musically -- are two odd bedfellows this particular July, yet gentle reminders of how musical theater connects us to ourselves and our heritage in profound, personal ways. |
