| It's a slow burn, this show. Not perfect, but tells a tale that needs to be told. Thanks for your post. I hope it runs the summer. | |

| What makes it a slow burn? I saw it and I remember that after the 2nd song I was fully into it, realizing it was less bubblegum and sacchraine than I expected and had a tunefulness and intelligence I was looking forward to continuing thorugh the show. Not a perfect show, not one the *great* musicals, but I think the most successful one this season after Great Comet and DEH... GC I consider a masterpiece, and DEH a moving piece with a wonderful score, both two of the best of the last decade at least... in a weaker season I think Bandstand would be a much bigger deal than it seems to be, especially considering it was shut out of so many Tony nominations. I would easily have nominated it for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book over Come From Away. | |

| I expected it to be reminiscent of "Over Here!" | |

| Which is entirely unfair, and typical of the way some of us pigeonhole shows before they're heard. And I loved "Over Here!" -- the Shermans' songs are infectious and wonderful -- and saw it on B'way. But this score is just a complex and very thoughtful piece of work, never settling for mere pastiche, despite a few echoes and cues to help locate the era. The score folds in traditional musical theater songs that expand its melodic and emotional range. I was besotted with it once I heard "Right This Way" and "Welcome Home." But now I appreciate all of it. The I Want song, "Donny Novitski" is just a wonderful intro to the protagonist -- and to my untrained ear, a tough sing, making Cott's performance that much more impressive. That's where he starts every night, a song that has the weight and reach of a second act epiphany. |

| I'm finally going to see it this week and I cannot wait. Listening to the CD has made me even more excited. | |

| A word of warning: try not to see it with Laura Osnes' understudy. I had that unlucky situation. She's completely and embarrassingly unequipped to sing the score. Other than that, I liked the show too. | |

| I was hoping to leave her name unsaid here, but it was Jessica Lea Patty. At intermission everyone in my area of the theatre was talking about how she was "pitchy" and you had to "imagine a good singer in the role." This is especially the case because the character herself is supposed to be a great singer and is invited to join a band. That's the whole point of the character. People in the show are repeatedly making comments about her great voice. In a city like New York with dozens (hundreds?) of first-rate singing actresses, I don't understand how they can't fill the understudy role with someone who can sing it well. | |

| Thanks. I'm kind of surprised to hear it was her, especially since I heard she was good when she went on as Eva in Evita. | |

| Is there any way of knowing when either of them will be out, prior to showing up at the theatre? I don't want to see it if they aren't in. | |

| Osnes is a pro and probably has one of the best track-records on Broadway for never calling out. Cott has a new baby which could lead to some call outs. Honestly though, I think they both know that this show is running on fumes grossing-wise and will probably only last until the end of the summer, so it's imperative that they are there. | |

| Cott and Osnes' attendance records have both been exemplary. Corey has only missed a few to rest and take care of his new baby (his understudy is fantastic) and Laura has only missed for the 4th of July special this week. They are both dedicated pros. | |

| Cott's attendance less predictable? He missed last week. | |

| Cott's work on the recording is wonderful. I'm more invested in seeing him, though Osnes is perfection. Has attendance been an issue with these two leads? I know that Cott was sick in previews. I assume his role is the more challenging. His I Want song, "Donny..." alone is a vocal workout. He has quite a range but show makes big demands. | |

| I don't know about his attendance, but he was superb. I imagine really big things are in store for his future. The acting, the voice, the looks, everything. | |

| His singing is superb, but it's so emotionally connected to this tortured young man's postwar frustrations. The heartbreak in his sung outrage (in "Right This Way" notably) is part of what makes this show feel so fresh. He got me. | |
