| Blythe Danner never appeared in the Broadway production of 1776, nor in any other stage production of the show. | |

| I just noticed your reply and all the replies to your reply. Yes, as mentioned below, it's her voice. I like her singing. I agree with Michael Portantiere that it might not have worked too well in the movie to have the song belted a la Buckley. I mean, Buckley's performance is thrilling, but I think that what Danner does works very well for the movie. | |

| It sounds like her -- you can even hear a few times some pre-nodes in her delivery of the song. Doesn't anyone ever notice that Blythe Danner at certain points in her career can barely talk without obvious cracks in her speaking voice? I think I read somewhere that she started as a soprano and some time after appearing to great success and a Tony in the non-musical "Butterflies Are Free" on Broadway somehow or somewhere got into big vocal problems (with a voice teacher maybe). I always liked her as an actress though and always thought she was lovely, but her speaking voice sometimes got in her way. | |

| I've mentioned here that Danner had been in musicals before she became a name thanks to Butterflies Are Free. She had been a soprano. A good friend was in a musical with her in those days. She damaged her voice doing Butterflies. I'm linking a page from an interview with her where she discusses this. | |

| I realize her own voice is credtied, it still sounds blandly sweetened. I can only compare it to her Phyllis on Broadway, when her speaking voice had changed so much. It's an odd thin sound, and makes sense. It's just so unlike the original performance(s), not just Buckley's. The number is so unexciting in the film, I want to blame someone else. |

| I think Blythe Danner's singing voice is just about perfect for that role and that song in the film of 1776, and if the decision had been made to cast anyone in the movie who would have belted the song in the manner of Betty Buckley, the number would have been a disaster. P.S. I don't agree that Danner's speaking voice had changed all that much between 1776 and FOLLIES. Of course it had changed somewhat, but I think the main difference is that in FOLLIES she was projecting in a theater. |

| A lot can change in 29 years. I don't know if Danner was/is a smoker, but her husband, Bruce Paltrow, was. That, plus the effects of aging, would explain why Danner's 2001 voice doesn't sound the same as her 1972 voice. | |

| Blame Jack Warner. He had a knack for casting bad singers in his films instead of using the Broadway originals who had sensational voices. | |

| True in many cases (Russell, Hepburn, Redgrave, Ball), but he also allowed many Broadway performers to recreate their roles on film. John Raitt, Carol Haney, Reta Shaw, Robert Preston, Pert Kelton, The Buffalo Bills, Paul Wallace, Faith Dane, Rex Harrison, Stanley Holloway, William Daniels, Howard da Sylva, Ken Howard, Virginia Vestoff, Beatrice Arthur...that's a whole lot, though they do prove your point. Except for Raitt and The Buffalo Bills, none are great singers. Doris Day and Shirley Jones were damned good substitutes for Janis Paige and Barbara Cook, though, and Danner, if not the equal of Buckley, sings her one song well. | |

| I guess it's a bit akin to the change in Jean Simmons voice between the film of Guys and Dolls and the London production of A Little Night Music. Neither was much of a singer, so neither worked on maintaining the range or tonal quality of their youth. | |
