Blame Jack Warner. He had a knack for casting bad singers in his films instead of using the Broadway originals who had sensational voices.

True in many cases (Russell, Hepburn, Redgrave, Ball), but he also allowed many Broadway performers to recreate their roles on film. John Raitt, Carol Haney, Reta Shaw, Robert Preston, Pert Kelton, The Buffalo Bills, Paul Wallace, Faith Dane, Rex Harrison, Stanley Holloway, William Daniels, Howard da Sylva, Ken Howard, Virginia Vestoff, Beatrice Arthur...that's a whole lot, though they do prove your point. Except for Raitt and The Buffalo Bills, none are great singers. Doris Day and Shirley Jones were damned good substitutes for Janis Paige and Barbara Cook, though, and Danner, if not the equal of Buckley, sings her one song well.
