Broadway Grosses 7/2: With no Bette, ’Dolly’ sinks by $1.36 million; ‘Indecent’ drops to half of prior week

  • Last week, ended July 2, grosses totaled $31,965,811 for 32 shows.

    In the prior week, ended June 25, Broadway grosses totaled $35,273,883 for 34 shows.

    In the comparable week last year, Broadway grosses totaled $26,033,651 for 29 shows.




  • In a week that included the long weekend leading up to Independence Day on Tuesday, Broadway grosses were down in all respects from the prior week but way ahead of a year ago. Last week, there were two less shows on the boards than the prior week and three more than the same week last year.

    — Without the vacationing Bette Midler, Hello, Dolly! dropped its gross by $-1,368,878 from the prior week with Ms.Midler in the lead.

    — Josh Groban’s final week in Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 was the show’s highest gross to date at $1,409,877 with the highest average ticket price to date at $155.48. That gross was $55,884 more than the prior week, but it is also about the same amount that Dear Evan Hansen went up from the prior week. With the always sold-out Hansen, that increase was due to additional premium ticket sales.

    — Indecent, grossing an impressive $606,137 in the prior week which was its originally-announced final week, was down last week by almost half to $313,029 in its hastily-announced first “extended” week. It is scheduled to close August 6.

    -- In the week following the prior opening-night week, 1984 was up by a significant $83,861.

    -- Both The Lion King and Wicked played 9 performances last week, instead of the usual 8, and each musical grossed over $2 million.




  • The revival of Noël Coward’s Present Laughter, starring Kevin Kline in a Tony-winning lead role, ended its limited engagement on Sunday at the St. James Theatre after 28 previews and 101 regular performances. Cumulative gross: $12,412,645 or 59% of its potential gross. The average ticket price over the run was $90 and 77% of the seats were occupied, paid and comped. The final week’s gross was its best at $910,174.




  • The Little Foxes ended its limited engagement on Sunday at the Friedman Theatre after 22 previews and 87 regular performances. In this Manhattan Theatre Club revival of the Lillian Hellman play, Laura Linney and Cynthia Nixon alternated in the roles of Regina and Birdie. Ms. Nixon won a featured actress Tony for Birdie. This was a not-for-profit production offering considerable discounts to MTC members. Cumulative gross: $6,213,082. On average, 96% of the seats were occupied, paid and comped. The final week’s gross was its best at $609,488 with sold-out houses and an average ticket price of $117.44.
