I so miss that 1970s staple: the variety show. Where else could you get something like this?

....it wasn't really a banner year for musicals, so it's not surprising that they might have needed some filler.

And it's kind of cool to see the number being done in its original setting- complete with parkas and fake ice floes- the way Mary Martin did it in LEAVE IT TO ME!.

That was the year Cher was appearing on Broadway in the play Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean. At that time it was common for the Tony's to includes special performances from stars as well as numbers from the nominated musicals.
