From Playbill.com's Today in Theatre History: July 5th, 1962 - Aspiring playwright LANFORD WILSON (1937-2011) arrives in New York City today, determined to start a career. Wilson has nowhere to stay tonight and finds himself sleeping in Central Park. Fortunately, he will not remain homeless forever, as Wilson will soon become a highly successful, Pulitzer-winning playwright, and co-founder of the Circle Repertory Company. He will immortalize the date of his New York arrival as the title of his well-known 1978 play, FIFTH OF JULY.

In his early days here, he sometimes slept at Edmund White's because, IIRC from what was written in either The Beautiful Room Is Empty or The Farewell Symphony, he was in love with White's roommate. And he needed someplace to sleep.
