re Gaston bully in Beauty and the Beast,
to those who have directed or acted: were you hoping for "boos" at the curtain call?
what was the response on Bway and major tours

I toured with "Beauty" for a year and a half, with a couple different Gastons. It depended on how many kids were in the audience (always more boos during matinees), and who was playing the role, honestly! Some Gastons really reveled in getting "boos," so they happened more frequently. The curtain call was pretty specifically staged, though, and part of Gaston's curtain call was to hit a big bicep flex just before his bow, which would usually transition any "boos" into cheers, and it was a nice opportunity for them to transition from "Gaston" to "actor" - and accept the applause with grace.

But - to answer your question: "Boos" were not solicited, but they weren't uncommon. One of our Gastons may have gotten a note that he was a little TOO encouraging of the audience's despise ;) Truthfully - if the creative team wanted "boos," it would've been happening 8 times a week. This is Disney, after all, don't forget that every second of that show until the curtain comes down is staged thoughtfully and thoroughly.

Although the show was seen by some as a Panton that didn't just run for the holiday season!

IMO - Gaston is no bully, just a buffoon - pretty comical in his puffed-up brainless vanity. Disney's version of Carl-Magnus, lol. Not a character that warrants booing. Even as things get darker in Act II, I don't see him as such a threatening character. Only perhaps in the fight with the Beast.

I know that Ismay got booed in the original production of Titanic - that makes more sense to me - if indeed booing a character is really something necessary at all, lol.

Hugh Jackman was Gaston in his first professional stage appearance in Australia. At the stage door, a little girl who had just seen the show handed him her book for his autograph. She did not recognize him (without the stage makeup) and asked : "Who are you?" HJ : "Gaston. "Little girl ( snatching back her autograph book) : "Nooo!!! You're bad!"

As narrated by Hugh.

Ha! I love that!

But I also have to say I wasn't thinking about young kids booing - more the reaction of an audience in general, with a sort of knowing wink to the fact that they're booking the character, not the actor. I have to say I'm not sure I want to encourage kids to boo at a curtain call - unless, again, they're savvy enough to be in on the convention. ;-)
