| I'll admit to being excited about this production of Follies, cast looks fantastic, huge cast, decent sized orchestra, but I loathe the show. Love the music, but can't imagine sitting down to a meal with any of the four leading characters. Now what am I supposed to do. And, I have all the important cast albums of the darn show, and I'm guessing another is coming. | |

| Have you read "Everything Was Possible" by Ted Chapin? It's about the assembling of the original production and I can't recommend it highly enough. He talks a bit about the ongoing book problems and how they could have been fixed (in his opinion) had anyone wanted to. While I don't base my like or dislike for a show on whether or not I'd like to have dinner with the leads, I understand your comment to mean you see the four leads as unlikable characters that you can't or don't care to relate to. It's certainly no secret that this has always been a problematic book. | |

| Yes I have read the book, thanks for recommending it. I actually kept it which I don't always do. So many fascinating tidbits, possibly the greatest look behind the scenes while a musical is being formed. Liking the characters is important for me, I have to relate to what they are going through. In this case: Sally needs to get over the guy that got away. Buddy needs to learn to like himself enough that he realizes he deserves better than being a second choice. Ben needs to take responsibility for the choice he made, either fix it or live with it Phyllis wanted what she got, the power and the prestige, now deal with the responsibilities that come with it. I just dislike each and everyone of them the minute they get past their songs. I can take the intense emotions of the music but the wining of the book scenes. I love the cast of the last Broadway revival and PS Classics did their usual superb job producing the cast CD. Bernadette came in just behind the never to be bettered Barbara Cook, bringing wearmth to a character that has little and the rest of the cast was superlative as well. But............................there is too much dialogue for a comfortable listen, for me at least. BTW I have almost the same problem with Company, plus the fact that the set up of a man with 6 married couple friends doesn't ring true for me unless he is Gay, which the book emphatically states he is not. I can't warm to any of the characters including Robert who I played in the original production, late in the run as a replacement. |

You were in the original production of Company and never learned how many married couples were in Robert's orbit? It was never 6; it's always been 5. And outside of Sally, your breakdown of the characters in Follies is very confused. Generally speaking, none of the characters have come to terms with the choices they've made, but your thumbnail sketches of the other three misses the mark. Buddy's not the one who never learned to "like himself" - that's Ben. And it's Ben's great fear that everything was too easy for him & he'll be exposed as a fraud. Buddy fell head over heels for a woman who clearly never loved him, and he can't fall out of love with someone who makes him feel like a failure. As for Phyllis, she's not comfortable with the woman she's become since marrying Ben; there's a duality in her personality, and she can't help longing for the woman she originally was. |

| On July 1, you posted this in a thread about 1776: "I was in the original Broadway Cast and Howard DaSilva behaved reasonably well during our run." On June 17, you posted this in a thread on The Boys in the Band: "I arrived in NYC right out of high school early June 1969. I knew I was gay. Did three auditions my first week there and was cast in 2 things. Did a quick summer stock of Bye Bye Birdie then out to Minneapolis for musicals in repertory at Guthrie." 1776 opened on Broadway in March 1969 (after opening first in New Haven in February, and then moving to D.C.). How could you have been in the original cast if you didn't arrive in New York until after it opened, and you said that your first jobs were a quick summer stock of Bye Bye Birdie and then you went to the Guthrie for musicals in rep? The Guthrie site lists five productions in 1969: Julius Caesar, The Beauty Part, The Homecoming, Mourning Becomes Electra, and Uncle Vanya. And if you arrived in NYC right out of high school in June 1969, you must have been 18 or so. Did Hal Prince cast you as Robert in Company when you were 20 or 21? The show closed on January 1, 1972. As far as I know, five actors played the role during the Broadway run (this includes standbys and understudies): Dean Jones, Larry Kert, John Cunningham, Kenneth Cory, and Gary Krawford. The youngest was Cory, who was born July 21, 1941 (if his online date of birth is to be trusted), making him just a few months older than Krawford (born March 23, 1941, again if his online date of birth is correct). On July 3, you posted this in the thread about "Make Our Garden Grow" that moved, naturally enough, into a more general discussion of Candide: "BTW, part of this comes from appearing in the first NYC revival (1970) of the original version, but with much music restored and mostly conducted by Leonard Bernstein." I replied to your post about this, but you did not respond to my reply. There was no 1970 production. I asked if perhaps you had been in the November 1968 New York Philharmonic concert in honor of Bernstein's 50th birthday, which was conducted by Maurice Peress. It did restore a good deal of cut music, along with music that was written for later productions of the piece but that had not been heard before in New York. But if you arrived in New York in June 1969, you can't have been in that. What Candide were you in? I know that you're the West Coast of Florida reviewer for this site, and that you go as William S. Oser in your job as reviewer. Did you perform under a different name? I think you also said here a year or two ago that you were in the original production of The Rothschilds, perhaps as a replacement. Anyway, I can't find anyone with all the credits you've claimed. Maybe I'm missing someone. |

| When you say late in the run, do you mean the final week? I hadn't realized until I looked on IBDB that someone played Bobby for just the last week, which seems a bit odd, in terms of the expense to hire and train someone for the part. | |

| Gary Krawford had been on the tour as Peter and as the Robert understudy. For the final week of the Broadway run, he was brought in to the Broadway production as Robert. Later, he took over as Robert on the tour. Based on what else Snowysdad has said about his career, I don't think he's Gary Krawford. | |

| He was also a replacement Matt in The Fantasticks, which is funny because John Cunningham had been a replacement El Gallo. Linking his ovrtur page with some of his other musical theatre credits. He's also got movie and television credits that can be found on imdb. As I've mentioned before, he is Robert on the TOFT video of the Company national tour, shot at the final Saturday matinee in D.C. He's really terrific in the video. | |

| Thanks for the info. There is something kind of perfect about someone who doesn't really like or understand Robert playing Robert, which mirrors how the character himself is living his life. (Of course, I did see a production a few years back where the Robert didn't really understand the character and the whole show sank, so this isn't a foolproof approach to the play.) |

| Macbeth--thats true even though you aren't supposed to like them. ?BTW like the opera way more than the play. Oedipus--Believe it or not I've never actually seen it, but that is being corrected in October or November when I will review the Asolo Conservatory Production. I expect that I won't have that problem as he is a greek hero, a man with a fatal flaw Dracula--Again the audience is not supposed to like him LOL loved your comment. |

| Not to mention Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett - especially if they're preparing the meal! Hey, I wouldn't want to have dinner with Charles Foster Kane either, but I still consider Citizen Kane a terrific movie. |

| Indeed. That really is the lamest criteria I have come across in many a long year. I have to say, I've never once thought with any play I've ever seen about dining with the leading characters. I guess it takes all sorts. | |

| Also, I think all 4 leads would be interesting dinner companions for at least 1 dinner. But more importantly, I'd want to be at a dinner observing all 4 characters there together with me at dinner. | |
