Letts' "Mary Page Marlow" to 2nd Stage next June (2018); Lila Neugebauer directs

I started a whole thread on this play about six weeks ago. Was deeply moved by it on the page. This is great news, being scheduled for Second Stage late next spring. Wondering if Carrie Coon and Blair Brown will be able to recreate their roles?

It's almost as if Letts is now becoming a resident playwright at Second Stage. I wonder if this will go into the Helen Hayes, which would be a nice way for them to kick off the new theatre.
While I admire Letts' writing, I did prefer "Man From Nebraska" to "Mary Page Marlowe". Wonder what this means for "The Minutes" which has already been announced for Broadway by Scott Rudin earlier this year for the 2017-18 season on Broadway. Or is that no longer happening?

The Minutes is happening. It's a separate, commercial production, not affiliated with Second Stage.

As I believe I mentioned on your prior thread, I saw the Chicago world premiere and wasn't really taken with it. I thought the entire affair was rather slapdash, very abbreviated, and the ending really bothered me. (Your praise for the script has made me consider reading it, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.)

I was really surprised that Anna Shapiro wasn't returning to direct this production, although Neugebauer is one of the more interesting young directors around. But to me, that suggests maybe they want to take this production in a new direction. As such, it wouldn't surprise me if they overhauled the cast. Of course, many of the cast were Chicago actors. Coon, being Letts' wife, might be the most likely to return (barring any conflicts), but to me honest, I found her to be the weakest link in the original production. Brown was excellent as the oldest Mary (which I found very underwritten), so I'd be happy to see her return.

But as for me, the jury is still out as to whether I'll see the new production.

Too many Marys on stage?

To briefly revisit my point about reading, rather than seeing, the play:

You were given the theatrical conceit -- this woman is played by a handful of different actors. You have to make constant adjustments, scene by scene, as you move through her narrative. In addition to figuring out where we are in the story, you have to settle in with a new human being embodying the character.

Readers have the advantage of coming into the story more like immersion in a novel. We see the "same" Mary in every scene. We aren't jarred because she's always our leading character -- the one in our head.

Your points strike me as spot on about the play's possibly biggest weakness: that use of (too) many Marys.

Potential spoiler?

I wasn't even really bothered by the use of multiple actors (most were top-notch), or the non-chronology of the script. My main issue was that I felt, at the end of this brief play, that I still didn't know this woman. Didn't know what made her tick. Didn't know what caused her to so often lean into self-destruction. And definitely didn't get enough of a picture of her sober, post-incarceration life, which we are led to believe was a happy one: finally some equilibrium, a good marriage, etc. We don't really get to know the other characters at all, but that didn't even bother me as much--they are clearly meant to be seen as minor characters in Mary's story, whether she's married to them, mother to them, lover to them, etc. But I still couldn't help feeling there was a rather large void in my understanding of who Mary was. I've perhaps been a bit hard on Coon's performance--she plays Mary at her most complicated and self-destructive, and in Chicago, I didn't feel she got anywhere near the levels of emotional depth that those scenes required. But maybe the fault is as much or more in the writing as in her performance. That's probably why I'm hoping there will be some revision to the Second Stage production.

Do you think Letts will do any rewrites
prior to the New York production?
