Pipeline- LCT

Tonight, I saw Pipeline. As a LCT member, I tend to see everything- and this was one of those plays I knew very little about. Didn't know the writer, Director or the cast. Read the synopsis when I bought my seats- and again today. In the meantime, I've seen very little on here about the show. Is this such a low key show that no-one is talking about it? It opens Monday. I hope the reviews are stellar and it lives beyond the Newhouse. The show is pretty great- fantastic acting, intelligent story, thought provoking and certainly a tad upsetting. It's a rare find- in a season of pretty incredible plays (i.e.: Incident, Band Visit, Dolls House 2 etc). This truly deserves board accolades and hopefully, it will fill one of the upcoming Broadway houses. Spoke to most of the cast afterwards- all lovely- all full of conversation about the subject. Highly recommended.

I saw it on July 2, thought it was superb--writing, direction, cast--and responded to an earlier post from someone asking about it ( separate thread). No one responded or commented on my post and I've been surprised at the lack of comments on ATC. So, thank you for your post. And I'm glad others are seeing it and are having positive reactions. I'm guessing that the reviews will be great and that it will be extended/ transferred. I hope so.

So lucky to have met the cast!

I also thought this a great play, with a fantastic ensemble. I'm a fan of DM's work, and recommend her Detroit Trilogy (though I've only seen two pieces of it: Detroit '67 at the Public and Skeleton Crew at the Atlantic (come to think of it, both in very small spaces, too). Hopefully word of mouth and reviews will reward this small and powerful play.

By the way, did you notice how many cellphones (beyond those of the characters) went off last night?

Did you have a problem with cell phones at the performance you attended? I usually find that I can't get any service at all underground at the Newhouse.

Yes! One went off quite loudly in one the early scenes where she is addressing the students - in character, she waited until the person turned it off (as a teacher might) said thank you and went back to the script.

The others sounded more like beeps than a cell phone ring, so they could've been texts? Reminders? (Others around me remarked upon them as well).

I NEVER get any service in the bowels of the Newhouse - which is quite ok, especially when we're talking about a one act, intermissionless 90 minutes.

isn't "the bowels of the Newhouse where Ms. LuPone's famous phone lifting incident occurred?

Yes, indeed - and even then I wondered how in the world anyone got such good service there! Maybe I need to have a conversation with someone at Verizon :-D

The show definitely seems to be flying a bit under the radar, and I think part of that could have to do with the timing--beginning previews mid-June and opening right after the 4th. Lots of people going out of town on vacation and maybe not so focused on theater. But I think the show will gain in prominence, especially if it opens to good reviews. Dominique Morisseau is extremely talented. To me, her play Skeleton Crew should have won the Pulitzer over the similarly themed Sweat. And I'm happy to see the terrific, underrated Karen Pittman land a leading role. I'm going this weekend.
