It's hard to take your points seriously when you skipped two of the four nominees including the winner. DEH has a better score than any or the other 3. It has the best lead actor (I like Andy Karl, but I don't feel Groundhog Day performance is one for the ages). And it has the most relevant story since teen suicide is a huge epidemic in this country with a Netflix series being highly acclaimed on this subject. DEH has its flaws, but it is a superior musical to the others and deserves to win. And I really liked CFA and felt it was the second choice for voters.

And comparing Anastasia average ticket price as almost as high as wicked (a 14 year old show in a much larger house that still has higher average price) is really fake news.

Love ya anyway.

For me, there wasn't a single nominated score that was worth a nomination. I pretty much hated all of them.

And I'll take the opportunity, because i take any i can find, to say that I thought (having seen it twice) that Great Comet was the best musical of the season, and is better than DEH. I'm not surprised DEH won Best Musical but I think Great Comet REALLY deserved Best Score more. To me it's like La Cage vs Sunday or Wicked/Avenue Q vs Caroline or Change.

And it's also hard to take you seriously when you write about why a show didn't win the Tony while admitting at the same time that you haven't seen the show that did. Seems a bit presumptuous, wouldn't you say? Also, when the Tony voters cast their ballots, they had no idea how many other Tonys DEH would win. I guess the reason it won is because more voters thought it deserved to win than the other nominees. (By the way, I enjoyed CFA when I saw it but it didn't come close to sticking with me the way that DEH has.)

And by the way, the word is hurdles, not hurtles. If this was an error in a post I wouldn't mention it but this is an error in a published piece.

While I would take issue with whether DEH has a better score than the other three (I love Great Comet and listen to it far more often than DEH) and, like Bill, have not seen the winner (nor CFA), I do think, barring one of those really unpredictable upsets, DEH had more steam and more wide appeal, for the reasons you mentioned. Like some others, I have listened a number of times to the CFA CD and just can't hang onto any of it. It's not that it's more choral, for me,, or that the style is not my cup of tea in any simple sense, it just doesn't draw me to it. I may yet see it, out of curiosity (and I realize that the seeing is what makes the production, not just listening to the music), but it somehow feels like "school" I am obliged to experience as someone who want to "complete" my Tony-season experience. I am a bit more held by the DEH score, though it is just isn't as much my kind of music (that may be somewhat generational), but the topic is simply more on everyone's mind (for good reason), it had a number of notable individual performances, including, from all I can gather, an iconic and defining one by Platt, and that tends to be add up to more awards.

I do think Karl's performance, in another year, would have easily taken home the award--it's a great combination of character development, physicality, and strong singing--almost archetypal in its musical comedy leading man qualities.
