| Murphy is a generous, charming Dolly Levi and, as such, she snaps this revival into focus. Midler, a star personality, has always been her own show; she relates first and foremost to the audience. But Murphy, unlike Midler, is an actor. She cannot bend Dolly Levi to her will, she has to find her which she does splendidly. In the process, and largely because she is better related to her fellow actors, everyone and the show itself is more appealing. The surprise here is that HELLO DOLLY!, often an apotheosis of camp spectacle, doesn't have to be in order to work. Here, it handily supports, and is even enhanced by, the less obvious, more rigorous, and no less funny woman at its heart. | |
