I fully agree, and would only add: we needn't go back to "The Rose," her first film, and a triumph, to find evidence of her acting chops. Her comedic gifts are off the charts. As usual, comedy gets less attention. But it's her comic sensibilities that make this current performance -- and surely it's an acting achievement, not a mere synergy of star presence and vehicle -- so admired and beloved.

It's wonderful that the Murphy Dolly is so warmly received, its a great credit to this B'way star -- and the production -- that it works so well. But this new argument, that we now have a "real" actor in the role, doesn't feel fair. Or necessary. Two actors, two approaches, both seem to work in this production.

For the record: Midler's stage acting chops were on display when she played Sue Mengers. I was in the last row of the Booth's upstairs, and she was persuasive and mesmerizing, holding her own for the full 90 minutes, not a note sung, not a Divine Miss M persona holding sway.
