| I'm really sick of people on this board creating revisionist history about Bette Midler at every turn. Very few people in the show business can match her impressive resume in as many categories. Her performance in The Rose would have won her the Oscar in most years, she was a bonafide box office draw in the 1980s, stringing together five straight hit movies that she carried (no small feat in Hollywood); she has been a successful recording artist; her concerts have sold out for four decades at venues far larger than 54 Below and continues to play large venues reserved for A-list talent in Vegas, she is one of the most sought after TV show guests in the history of the genre and her appearance with Johnny Carson's second to last Tonight Show is considered to be the one of TV's greatest shows ever. Hello, Dolly! has never been successfully revived on Broadway until she took on the role. She hasn't played to an empty seat--no will she ever in the show. This is one of the greatest personal triumphs in musical theatre history. If you think it makes you a discerning iconoclast to knock her performance, fine, but let's at least stick to the facts. |
