| Sir Laurence Olivier who knew a little about such things said of Bette Midler, "Genius is a terrible word in our profession. I’ve spent most of my life believing that acting is not an art but an interpretive craft. But Bette Midler must be as near to being a genius as makes no matter. I know only that I sat there wearing an idiotic grin and happier than I can remember." I suspect he would think no less of her Dolly. This is not to think less of Donna Murphy who I adored as Dolly Gallagher Levi. It is two different actresses with two different approaches creating two different characters both of which fit into this glorious revival. |
