In the theatre - but perhaps only in the theatre, I found the recording disappointing too - Smith's great achievement was to demonstrate that you really *don't* need a voice like Streisand's to play the character.
As I said somewhere else, the recording does not play to her strengths. At the Menier, it was a thrilling performance. As preserved on the album, to me anyway, it just isn't. |
