p. 71 of "A Chorus Line and the Musicals of Michael Bennett" by Ken Mandelbaum: "Bennett later admitted that he only created this dance because the audience expected Nelson to have one showy number."
In the book, Stephen Sondheim describes Bennett's work on the Loveland sequence, and on the musical numbers in the show. Hal Prince was too smart to get in Michael Bennett's way when it came to choreography. The details that Sondheim supplies make it clear that Bennett is in every way the co-director of the show. |
