it's one of the few flaws, for me, in Follies

I adore "The Right Girl" and the dance section, and the videos I've seen of Gene Nelson and the original choreography, and reading about it.

HOWEVER... this isn't a "follies" fantasy number, this is the real Buddy expressing himself. The only people in Follies who dance outside of follies songs are the ones doing songs from when they were in the Weismann Follies. Buddy wasn't in the Weismann Follies though. We have nothing in the show (that I recall from my numerous readings and viewings of the show, but maybe I forget) that tells us Buddy was a dancer (for Weismann or anyone) or wanted to be... and yet, out of nowhere he breaks out into this incredible (or not incredible depending on the production/actor) dance expressing his feelings. To me it totally breaks from the clear concept and rules laid out for the audience, despite how wonderful it is.

I've never understood why Goldman didn't, on his own or at the behest of Prince or Bennett when they knew they were giving Gene Nelson a dance, write in that Buddy had always wanted to be in the Follies? To me that would take care of the betraying of the concept, and it might actually be pretty great because it adds another layer to Buddy's interest in Sally and what's underneath his dancing in "The Right Girl", the only way he can truly unleash his anger is by doing what he always wished he could, dancing, and in the Weismann theater no less.

Always bothered me.
