But if we can accept the musical theater convention of characters (who may not be career singers) bursting into song to express themselves (like Ben), why wouldn't it be acceptable for a character to burst into dance expressively? And as for why the other principal characters don't dance as well: Ben and Phyllis are too cool to dance (except maybe in an impersonal pas de deux), and what would be an appropriate dance for Sally - a mad ballet? I think the agitation in Buddy's energy at this point in the show calls for some kind of physical outburst, and Bennett (and Nelson) provided it.
