a couple of points to throw into the mix:
1. Yes it is a business, but in just about any business one has to concern oneself with nurturing the important assets that make the business run. And that is especially true when it is the theatre and one depends on talent. It's not the same thing to fire the lead in a show, someone who is on stage every night making it possible for you to try and make a buck, together with a bunch of other talent, as it is to fire a junior analyst at a hedge fund. (And all that is without regard to race at all.)
2. Scott Rudin does not have to cast Beyoncé to replace Bette; he has already recouped and his investors are already happy. |
