| Yes to all but my point is that some people see things differently than you do, because of first hand experience (and centuries of it on their shoulders), and are all too familiar with what they view as window dressing. They also see a rare opportunity to gain attention to this subject and perhaps illuminate it. (I think that Azudi Onyejekwe's contribution to this conversation is the best thing to come out of the whole mess.) Let's look at this sensitive subject in another way that might (or not) resonate differently. The NYPD is one of the most diverse law enforcement agencies in the world. And it has more people employed in diversity training, outreach etc etc etc than any other police force anywhere. But when a young black man is stopped because his tail light is out, some will see that as a pretext while others will look at it and point out that driving without a tail light is a violation, justifying the stop, with no further discussion necessary. Oh and yes I was knowingly unfair and hyperbolic and evincing a lack of perspective. Kinda like some people you are implicitly criticizing are suggesting about some people not of color. I cannot speak for any person of color. I can speak as a gay person, and say that being told to be quiet when I think gays are being systematically discriminated against because the straight person speaking to me doesn't see the discrimination does not sit well with me. and isn't cool. |
