I didn't know that about Oak's bio... i find it funny, but also in light of the context it's now been put it, I can't help but feel like it shades him as not being entirely happy with the experience in the first place, before they cut his performances short.
Also I think it's worth saying that it's not JUST that Hamilton cast members aren't the box office draws they may have been... I think if Lin or Tony winners Leslie Odom Jr or
Daveed Diggs who was an actual breakout star from the show (unlike Oak) had taken over Pierre, it would have done better while they were in it than with Oak. You can't take someone with a small supporting role in a large cast show and expect that just because the show itself is a phenomenon that anyone who was in any notable role in the original cast will sell tickets. We'll never know how any other actor would have done at the GC box office... but I think it's reasonable to guess that the actual stars of Hamilton would have done better in a show that was already doing pretty well (unlike Amelie which no one really liked in previews or pre-broadway, so I don't think that P. Soo example can fully proven my thoughts here wrong). |
