| I ask because I thought Groban was fine and sang great, but not sure if he really fulfilled in the role. Mandy Patinkin did seem like he would've been a perfect fit...the tortured, somewhat self-loathing, humanist outsider. You know who would be exciting? Kevin Spacey. Aside from star-power and Pierre's being overweight (which is achieved with a fat-suit), I wonder why they cast Oak and what he did with it. He, like many in "Hamilton" except for Odom and Miranda and the three ladies, struck me as an extremely affable team-player but not someone who suggests taking on the conscience of the world (isn't the what Pierre does?). SPOILERS: Further, and I'm not talking skin tones here at all, I think the show's ingenuity of script and staging can't balance out a story that's negligible. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's kind-of about a shallow girl developing a shallow but dramatic crush on a shallow boy, not bothering to find out of he's available, and then getting very upset when it all falls apart. Right? I mean, this ain't a very attractive or deep or noble heroine. And then, of course, there's also Josh Groban singing about life and wonderful staging and some dandy show-y supporting performances. It seems like its vacuity is why it has a hard time finding audiences. I know it's from Tolstoy, but it doesn't tell a story that would demand a long run. I mean, Evan Hansen has us crying about our unresolved loneliness and alienation. Hamilton has fun lyrics and finds a way to make Americans (whatever their heritage) feel good about America. Dolly celebrates taking risks and heterosexual monogamy and has some very pretty costumes and tunes. "The Great Comet," though interesting, isn't a great show that delivers a knock-out punch. So it may not run much longer. I may be unduly harsh, but this seems the problem. The great, long-running shows had terrific stories with a central character that grows (cf., Josh Logan's biographies). |
