| What a show is about is not the same as what its plot is. I don't think your description of Great Comet is at all what it is about, or what it's like to see. I also don't think you make a good case for DEH, Hamilton, or Dolly being "good" shows while Great Comet is supposed to not be. And I do think, as do the many people I know who like the show, that Great Comet deserve a knock out punch in the way of a beautiful and entertaining show with a breathtaking ending. You are being unduly hard and I cannot even tell from your post if you've seen Great Comet, but you're making generalizations that I know you know aren't true. Some of the biggest hits of all time do not have both or even either a terrific story and central character that grows... ex: Phantom, Cats... even A Chorus Line, does anyone really grow or are they just presented in interesting ways? Does Jean Val Jean really grow anything but old in Les Miz? He changes in act 1 between his attitude as an ex-con and the man he becomes after the priest saves him, but after that he's pretty much the same the rest of the show. Fantine, Javert, Cosette, Eponine - do they change? Interesting story, yes, to many, but not both change and story. So I'd say your recipe is more sure fire for a good musical but it is not the only recipe for success. I also don't think Great Comet ran for 9 months in a broadway theater on Groban fans alone... I can attest personally that it didn't. And I think Great Comet is a great show. I think lots of shows are great that aren't long-running... and many of them have an interesting stories and a central character that changes, and some do not, just like the shows that do run a long time. |
