I understand his statement was simply about "never taking a role if it would hurt another actor"... but I find that to be a bit vague and also a bit of self-saving baloney. I'm not sure how he defines "hurt", but it SEEMS clear based on box office that the producers got scared and wanted to end Oak's run early if they could find someone with a bigger drawing name to come into the show. I do think that's their right as producers and I think keeping an actor in a show whose presence as the lead could sink the show into closing because of slow sales, especially an actor with no name and little experience let alone as a Broadway lead, is not fair either.

If he was really so concerned it wouldn't take much for he or his agents to find out that Oak was scheduled for longer and reach out to him about whether or not he was leaving early or being forced out early. I would not normally say that's his "responsibility" but it is if he thinks that scenario would qualify as "hurting" another actor to the point where he would not only not accept a role but back out of a role they have already publicized and advertised him taking.
