Without Groban, it would have closed a lot sooner. This is just not a show with wide appeal or family-friendly, as most successful musicals have to be. I think they were right to market their star, but they should have had a suitable replacement lined up. And they way it was rolled out was one of the worst cases of PR mismanagement I've ever seen. Is the publicist to blame or did the Kagans not listen to their PR team about how to do this?

I think perhaps Mr. Kagan was overestimating the star quality of the Hamilton cast. Philippa Soo couldn't sustain a show and neither can Oak at this point in either of their careers. Lin-Manuel, yes, and I daresay, perhaps Leslie Odom, Jr. But the rest of the cast, talented as they were, are just not stars that sell tickets. Perhaps the breakout star is Daveed Diggs, but he hasn't been tested.

The whole ARS Nova fiasco was a result of an inexperienced producer thinking he could apply aggressive and ruthless real world business practices to the theater. This is a continuation of that same philosophy. While I think he was right in trying to bring in Mandy, he thought there wouldn't be consequences, especially after bungling the announcement of the transition.
